NHTSA safety advisory
Park this vehicle outside
NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.
This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The brake pressure switch defect creates a potential fire hazard in a critical vehicle safety system. Without any reported fires, injuries, or property damage from this defect, the hazard remains theoretical, qualifying this recall as High (3) per the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has not been reported.
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain International CV trucks from model years 2017 through 2023. The brake pressure switch assembly may develop leaks that allow brake fluid to contact the switch's electrical components.
When brake fluid enters the electrical components, it can cause an electrical short-circuit. This short can overheat the circuit and create a risk of fire while the vehicle is in use or parked.
Owners should park their vehicles outside and away from structures until repairs are completed. Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch assembly free of charge, and if necessary, the wire harness or fuse. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 16, 2023. For more information, owners can contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
