NHTSA safety advisory
Park this vehicle outside
NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.
This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Structural brake system defect with potential for fire in commercial vehicles; no reported injuries or property damage. Per the rubric, theoretical hazards without reported incidents are limited to a maximum score of 3.
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain commercial buses and trucks with a defective brake pressure switch assembly. Affected vehicles include the 2016 International DuraStar, 2018-2020 and 2023-2024 International 1300FBC Stripped chassis, 2019-2022 IC Bus CE, 2019-2024 IC Bus TC, and 2019-2024 International MV vehicles. Approximately 6,786 vehicles are affected.
The brake pressure switch assembly may leak brake fluid into its electrical components, causing an electrical short circuit. This short circuit can overheat the electrical circuit, increasing the risk of fire while the vehicle is driving or parked.
Owners are advised to park affected vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch and, if necessary, the wire harness or fuse free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 29, 2023.
