What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: No injuries, deaths, or fires have been reported. This recall addresses a potential fire risk in school buses due to brake system electrical short-circuits. This meets the High severity criterion: a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain IC Bus CESB school buses from 2016 and 2018 through 2024. The brake pressure switch assembly may leak brake fluid into the electrical components of the switch, causing an electrical short-circuit.

This short-circuit can overheat the circuit and increase the risk of a fire while the bus is driving or parked. Approximately 15,398 vehicles are affected by this recall.

Owners should park the buses outside and away from structures until repairs are completed. Navistar will replace the brake pressure switch assembly and, if necessary, the wire harness or fuse at no cost. Notification letters were mailed on September 29, 2023.
