Chevrolet Equinox EV pedestrian alert sound may be insufficient
General Motors is recalling certain 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV vehicles because the pedestrian alert sound system may not change volume enough between standstill and low speed, failing FMVSS 141.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: pedestrians may not hear the vehicle approaching at low speed, and no incidents are recorded.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV vehicles. About 23,700 units are potentially affected.
The pedestrian alert sound system may not produce a sufficient change in volume between the vehicle being stopped and moving at low speeds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141, "Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles".
NHTSA states that a vehicle that fails to make sufficient sound may result in pedestrians being unaware of an approaching vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.
The body control module software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 17, 2025. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
