Mazda CX-50 airbag module software may cause improper deployment

Mazda is recalling certain CX-50 Hybrid and CX-50 vehicles because incorrectly configured module software may cause the airbag to deploy improperly. All affected vehicles are under dealer control.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 4 covers structural vehicle defects: the airbag may not deploy as designed in a crash, which compromises occupant protection at the moment it is needed.

Plain-English summary

Mazda North American Operations is recalling certain CX-50 Hybrid and CX-50 vehicles. Two vehicles are potentially affected.

Incorrectly configured module software may cause the air bag to deploy improperly.

NHTSA states that an air bag that deploys improperly increases the risk of injury during a crash.

Dealers will update the module software free of charge. Owner notifications will not be mailed because all affected vehicles are under Mazda dealer control. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
