2023 Toyota and Lexus vehicles recalled for airbag deactivation defect
Toyota is recalling 2023 Tacoma, Corolla, and other models with a steering column defect that may deactivate the driver's airbag. The defect could prevent airbag deployment in a crash, increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The defect affects a critical safety system (driver airbag) and violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208, but no injuries or failures have been reported. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products without reported injury classify as High.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2023 Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, and Tacoma models, as well as certain 2023-2024 Lexus NX and 2023 Lexus RX models. An electrical connection in the steering column's spiral cable assembly may be insufficiently welded, causing it to separate and deactivate the driver's airbag.
When this connection fails, the driver's airbag will not deploy as intended during a crash. This violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 (Occupant Crash Protection) and increases the risk of injury in a collision.
Approximately 1,716 vehicles are affected, some of which may have been improperly repaired under a previous NHTSA recall (23V-480). Owner notification letters were mailed beginning March 17, 2025.
Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information. Recall numbers are 25TA02 for Toyota and 25LA02 for Lexus. Dealers will inspect and replace the spiral cable assembly free of charge.
