2023 Toyota and Lexus vehicles recalled for steering column air bag defect
Toyota and Lexus are recalling approximately 152,927 vehicles with defective steering column welds that can deactivate the driver's air bag, increasing crash injury risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting a critical safety system (air bag deployment in the steering column). The defect can prevent air bag deployment during a crash, violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 and posing significant risk to occupants.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2023 model year vehicles including Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, and Tacoma, along with 2023-2024 Lexus RX350, RX350 Hybrid, RX500 Hybrid, NX250, NX350, and NX350 Hybrid models. The recall affects approximately 152,927 vehicles.
The defect involves an electrical connection inside the steering column's spiral cable assembly that may be insufficiently welded. This defect can cause the connection to separate and deactivate the driver's air bag, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
The vehicles are required to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 (Occupant Crash Protection). A deactivated air bag that does not deploy as intended violates this standard and poses a significant safety risk.
To address the issue, dealers will inspect and replace the spiral cable assembly if necessary at no cost. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 8, 2023. Owners should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 (Toyota recall number 23TA08) or Lexus for the Lexus vehicles (Lexus recall number 23LA02). Additional information is available through the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or www.nhtsa.gov.
