2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Air Bag System Defect Recall
General Motors is recalling 5 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles due to a manufacturing defect that left the air bag sensing diagnostic module in manufacturing mode. The module was not activated at the assembly plant, meaning air bags will not deploy in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle safety system defect: the air bag restraint control module was not activated, preventing air bag deployment in a crash. Although no injuries have been reported, the hazard is definite rather than theoretical, meeting the Severe (Score 4) criterion for structural vehicle defect.
Plain-English summary
General Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles. The sensing diagnostic module (SDM) controlling the air bag and occupant crash protection system was left in manufacturing mode and was not activated at the assembly plant prior to shipment. This defect affects the vehicle's air bag restraint control system.
Because the SDM was not activated, the affected vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208 (Occupant Crash Protection). An SDM in manufacturing mode will not deploy the vehicle's air bags during a crash, significantly increasing the risk of occupant injury or death.
Five Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles from the 2022 model year are affected by this recall. Notably, the vehicles had not yet been sold from dealer inventory when the defect was discovered, limiting consumer exposure.
To remedy the defect, dealers returned the vehicles to the GM assembly plant, where the sensing diagnostic modules were activated. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 for additional information. For NHTSA-related inquiries, owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
