What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in the air bag sensor mounting that could prevent air bag deployment in a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury, which aligns with the rubric criteria for structural vehicle defects and significant injury risk.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2016 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks manufactured between October 13, 2015, and October 14, 2015. The recall addresses a defect in the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
In the affected vehicles, the mounting stud used to secure the SDM may be incorrectly positioned. This misalignment can cause the SDM housing to fracture. If the housing fractures, water may enter the module, causing it to malfunction. This malfunction could hinder the proper deployment of the air bags in the event of a crash, thereby increasing the risk of occupant injury.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reposition the mounting stud and replace the SDM free of charge. The recall began on December 2, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15794.
