General Motors is recalling 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks because a welding defect may prevent the passenger airbag from fully inflating.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in the airbag inflator that may prevent full inflation, increasing the risk of injury, which aligns with the rubric criteria for structural vehicle defects.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Silverado trucks and model year 2014 GMC Sierra trucks. The affected vehicles were manufactured between June 1, 2013, and June 30, 2013. The recall involves a defect in the welding on the passenger airbag inflator.
The welding defect may cause the inflator to fracture when the airbag is deployed. If this occurs, gas from the inflator may vent behind the instrument panel instead of into the airbag, preventing the airbag from fully inflating. This condition increases the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger airbag module free of charge. The recall began on August 23, 2013. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-866-694-6546 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463. GM's recall number is 13230.
