Ford Explorer Rearview Camera Display Failure Increases Crash Risk
Ford is recalling 2020-2023 Explorer and Lincoln vehicles with rearview camera display failures caused by incorrect previous repairs. Loss of rear visibility increases crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a confirmed vehicle safety system failure that reduces rear visibility and increases crash risk. However, no injuries or deaths have been reported, which places it in the Score 3 category: 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2020-2023 Ford Explorer, 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator, and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles. These vehicles were previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 23V-342, and the repairs failed to resolve the underlying defect.
The defect is a video display failure in the Image Processing Module software that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying. Loss of the rearview camera image reduces the driver's rear visibility when backing up or reversing.
Without a functioning rearview camera, drivers lose a critical safety tool for seeing vehicles, pedestrians, and objects behind them. This loss of visibility increases the risk of backing-related crashes.
Owners should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 to schedule a free software update. Dealers will update the Image Processing Module software at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 25, 2025. Alternatively, owners may contact NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171). This recall affects 49,399 vehicles.
