Tesla rearview camera image may be delayed when reverse is selected

Tesla is recalling certain vehicles running software version 2026.8.6 because the rearview camera image may be delayed when the vehicle is placed in reverse, breaching FMVSS 111.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The defect degrades a visibility aid rather than a driving, braking or restraint function, which places it at the risk-of-harm level rather than Severe.

Plain-English summary

Tesla, Inc. is recalling certain 2017 and 2021-2023 Model 3, 2020-2023 Model Y, 2021-2023 Model S and Model X vehicles operating software version 2026.8.6. The campaign covers 218,868 vehicles.

The rearview camera image may be delayed when the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, Rear Visibility. A delayed rearview image reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall applies to owners and operators of the affected vehicles running that software version. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on 3 July 2026.

Tesla has released an over-the-air software update free of charge. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752, quoting recall number SB-26-00-001.
