International trucks recalled for Bendix ECU software defect affecting safety systems
International Motors recalls certain 2021-2025 RH, HV, MV, and LT trucks and other International models with Bendix ECU software defects that may disable critical safety systems. Contact International at 1-800-448-7825 for free ECU reprogramming.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No deaths or reported injuries are mentioned in the source, and this is not classified as a Class I recall. However, the defect affects multiple critical safety systems that prevent crashes (ABS, stability control, traction control, collision mitigation), and the agency explicitly states it increases crash risk. This fits the rubric criterion for a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
International Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2021-2025 RH, HV, MV, and LT trucks, 2021-2024 Lonestar trucks, 2021-2022 HX trucks, and 2022 PROSTAR trucks equipped with Bendix EC80 Advanced Electronic Control Units. Electrical noise and low signal strength may cause the ECU to malfunction or stop processing commands.
When the ECU fails, critical safety systems may lose functionality or work improperly. The affected systems include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control, Automatic Traction Control, Active Cruise Control, and Collision Mitigation System. Loss of these functions increases the risk of a crash.
Approximately 105,276 vehicles are affected by this recall. International will reprogram the ECU software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 16, 2024.
