Heartland Recalls 2015-2016 Trailers Due to Ladder Hinge Defect

Heartland is recalling 2,045 travel trailers because aluminum ladder hinges may separate, causing the ladder to fall and increasing injury risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect that poses a risk of injury if the ladder falls, but the source text does not report any actual injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.

Plain-English summary

Heartland Recreational Vehicles, LLC is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Cyclone travel trailers, 2015-2016 Road Warrior trailers, and 2016 Torque trailers. The affected vehicles were manufactured between July 6, 2014, and September 30, 2015. A total of 2,045 units are included in this recall.

The defect involves aluminum black ladders manufactured by Christianson Industries that feature retractable hinges. The welded 'top hat' component on these hinges can separate from the hinge itself. If this separation occurs while the ladder is in use, the ladder may fall from the vehicle, which increases the risk of injury to the user.

Heartland will notify owners, and dealers will install hinge braces over the back of the existing hinges at no charge. The recall began on December 2, 2016. Owners can contact Heartland customer service at 1-877-262-8032 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
