Plain-English summary

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Freightliner Custom Chassis XCP chassis manufactured between April 26, 2013, and January 15, 2015. The recall affects 128 vehicles equipped with specific 18,000lb and 20,000lb-load capacity front axles used in motor home applications.

On these rear engine chassis, the power steering fluid temperature may exceed the material ratings of the power steering hose. This condition can cause the hose to fail, resulting in a sudden loss of power steering fluid and power assist. Loss of power steering assist increases the difficulty of steering the vehicle at low speeds, which increases the risk of a crash.

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering hose with one that has a higher temperature rating, free of charge. The recall began on July 22, 2016. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
