Chrysler and Dodge Minivans Recalled for Airbag Deployment Risk

Chrysler is recalling 2008 Grand Voyager, Town and Country, and Grand Caravan minivans because an HVAC leak could cause the airbag to deploy without warning.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where an inadvertent airbag deployment could result in injury to the occupant or a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager, Town and Country, and Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured between June 24, 2007, and July 30, 2008. The recall involves approximately 298,949 vehicles.

The defect involves a heating and air conditioner (HVAC) condensate leak from the HVAC drain grommet. This leak can drip onto the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module, which may cause the airbag warning light to illuminate and lead to an inadvertent airbag deployment without warning. An unintended airbag deployment could result in injury to the seat occupant in front of the deploying airbag and/or a vehicle crash.

Dealers will replace the affected air bag module free of charge. The safety recall began on October 14, 2011. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
