Chrysler Recalls 2005-2006 Minivans for Front Airbag Sensor Defect
Chrysler is recalling 2005-2006 Dodge Caravan, Grand Caravan, and Town & Country minivans because front crash sensors may crack and allow water entry, potentially disabling airbag protection.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical component (airbag sensors) that may fail, posing a risk of harm in a crash, but no injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2005-2006 Dodge Caravan, Grand Caravan, and Chrysler Town & Country vehicles. The recall involves approximately 308,950 vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in specific states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Alaska, and the District of Columbia.
The front crash sensors may crack under certain environmental conditions, allowing water to enter the sensor. This can cause the sensor to become inoperative and illuminate the airbag warning light. If the sensors become inoperative, the airbags may not provide enhanced protection in the event of a crash. These sensors were added to enhance airbag system performance in certain frontal crashes.
Chrysler will replace the front airbag sensors with a new design at no cost to the owner. The safety improvement campaign began during June 2010. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 for more information.
