2023 Audi Q4 Sportback e-Tron: Transmission Gear Display May Fail and Cause Rollaway
Volkswagen and Audi are recalling certain 2021-2023 ID.4 and Q4 e-Tron vehicles because the transmission gear lever indicator may fail to display, risking unintended vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not engaged.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting transmission indication, a safety-critical system. No injuries, deaths, or actual crashes have been reported in the source. The hazard is theoretical—potential vehicle rollaway if parking brake is not engaged. Per the rubric, theoretical hazards without reported harm score at most 3.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America is recalling certain 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 and 2022-2023 Audi Q4 e-Tron and Q4 e-Tron Sportback vehicles. A total of 60,490 units are affected. The instrument panel may not properly display the transmission gear lever indicator, so drivers may not know whether the vehicle is in Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive.
Failure to display the gear position may result in an unintended vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not engaged, which increases the risk of a crash. The defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 102, which establishes requirements for transmission shift lever indication.
Owners have been notified by mail, with letters sent on March 14, 2025. Dealers will update the brake control unit software free of charge.
