Audi A5 and related Volkswagen vehicles recalled for seat belt retractor defect
Volkswagen Group is recalling certain 2025 and 2026 vehicles with damaged front seat belt retractors that may fail to restrain occupants in a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a critical safety component (seat belt retractor) where the defect could prevent proper occupant restraint in a crash. However, no injuries or failures have been reported, and the defect is theoretical. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products without reported injury are scored at most 3.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2025 Audi A5, S5, A6 Sportback E-Tron, and S6 Sportback E-Tron vehicles, as well as 2025 Volkswagen GTI and Golf R models, and 2026 Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 Sportback E-Tron vehicles. The torsion bar in one or both front seat belt retractors may have been damaged during production.
If a torsion bar is damaged, the seat belt retractor could fail in a crash. This failure could prevent the seat belt from properly restraining an occupant, increasing the risk of injury.
Owners have been notified and dealers will replace one or both front seat belts at no cost. Owners can contact Audi at 1-800-253-2834 or Volkswagen at 1-800-893-5298 for service. Vehicle identification numbers affected by this recall are searchable on NHTSA.gov.
