2022-2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Rearview Camera Software Error Recall
Volkswagen is recalling certain 2022-2024 Tiguan vehicles due to a camera control unit software error that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying, violating rear visibility safety standards.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a real defect in a safety-critical system (rear visibility) that violates federal safety standards and increases crash risk, though no injuries have been reported to date.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2022-2024 Tiguan vehicles, along with the 2023 Arteon and 2024-2025 Audi Q3 models. The recall affects approximately 29,569 vehicles total.
A software error in the camera control unit may occur at vehicle startup, preventing the rearview camera image from displaying as intended. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, which requires rear visibility capability.
When the rearview camera does not display an image, the driver's rear view is reduced, which increases the risk of a crash. Owners should contact their Volkswagen dealer or Audi service center to schedule a free software update.
Volkswagen owners can reach customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi owners at 1-800-253-2834. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9153) or visit nhtsa.gov.
