2021-2022 Audi vehicles recalled for rear-view camera software failure
Volkswagen Group is recalling certain 2021-2022 Audi vehicles due to a software error that may prevent the rear-view camera from displaying when reversing, potentially reducing driver visibility and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: A software defect prevents rear-view camera display, a safety feature required by federal standard FMVSS 111. No injuries or crashes have been reported, but the defect reduces rear visibility and increases crash risk when reversing, fitting the 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported' criterion.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2021 Audi A8 and S8, and 2022 Audi A3, A4, A5, E-Tron, Q3, Q5 Sportback, Q7, Q8, RS 6 Avant, RS Q8, S3, S5, SQ7, and SQ8. A software error in the infotainment unit may prevent the rear-view camera image from displaying when the vehicle begins to reverse, causing these vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111 (Rear Visibility). Approximately 2,857 vehicles are affected.
A rear-view camera that does not display an image reduces the driver's ability to see behind the vehicle when reversing, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will update the infotainment unit parameters at no cost to owners. Owner notification letters were mailed November 9, 2021. Affected owners can contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
