Audi vehicles recalled for faulty rearview camera display software
Certain 2021-2022 Audi vehicles may display a blank or black screen instead of the rearview camera image in reverse, reducing rear visibility and increasing crash risk. Dealers will update the infotainment software at no cost.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a failure of a safety-critical system (rear visibility) that violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 111. No injuries or crashes have been reported, but the defect increases crash risk, qualifying it as a risk-of-harm product without reported injuries per the severity rubric.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America is recalling certain 2021 and 2022 Audi vehicles, including the A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, Q8, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8, RS5, RS6, RS7, RSQ8, SQ5, SQ7, SQ8, E-Tron, and E-Tron GT. These vehicles contain an infotainment unit with a software defect.
When placed in reverse gear, the rearview camera display may show a blank or black screen instead of displaying the live camera image. This failure violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 111, which requires rear visibility. A non-functional rearview display reduces the driver's ability to see behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Owner notification was mailed October 25, 2022. Dealers will update the infotainment unit software at no cost. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for additional information.
