Nissan is recalling approximately 57,914 LEAF vehicles (2018-2022) where the rearview camera harness may become damaged, causing image distortion or loss and reducing rear visibility.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall qualifies as High (3) because it involves a structural vehicle defect affecting a safety-critical system (rear visibility per FMVSS 111), but no injuries or deaths have been reported in the source material. It represents a risk-of-harm situation where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Nissan North America is recalling approximately 57,914 Nissan LEAF vehicles from model years 2018 through 2022. The rearview camera harness can become damaged, causing the rearview camera display to show a distorted or completely lost image. This failure means the vehicle does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, which requires proper rear visibility.
A rearview camera that does not properly display an image reduces the driver's rear visibility. This increases the risk of a crash when reversing or backing up.
Nissan dealers will inspect the camera harness for damage at no charge. If damage is found, they will replace both the camera and harness. If no damage is found, protective tape will be applied and the harness will be rerouted. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 9, 2024. Owners can contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
