Nissan Altima and Sentra rearview camera harness defect increases crash risk
Nissan is recalling certain 2019-2021 Altima and 2020-2021 Sentra vehicles because the rearview camera harness can become damaged, preventing the camera display from working. This reduces rear visibility and increases the risk of crashes when backing.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The rearview camera harness defect creates a documented risk of crashes due to impaired rear visibility, meeting the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.' No fatalities or reported injuries exist, which excludes the higher severity categories.
Plain-English summary
Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling 153,376 certain 2019-2021 Nissan Altima and 2020-2021 Nissan Sentra vehicles. These vehicles are affected by damage to the rearview camera harness, which is the wiring connecting the rear-facing camera to the vehicle's display system.
Damage to the harness can cause the rearview camera display to become distorted or to stop working entirely. When the rearview camera does not function properly, it reduces the driver's rear visibility, which is required by federal safety standards. This creates an increased risk of a crash when the driver is backing up.
Nissan dealers will inspect the camera and harness for damage. If damage is found, the dealer will replace both components. If no damage is found, the dealer will apply protective tape to the harness and reroute it to prevent future damage. All repairs will be performed free of charge.
Owners should contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 to arrange an appointment. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on October 19, 2023.
