Nissan and Infiniti Recall Vehicles for Backup Camera Display Defect
Nissan is recalling 2018-2019 Nissan and Infiniti vehicles because backup camera settings can be adjusted to hide the rear view image, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the lack of a rear view image increases the risk of a crash, but no specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan and Infiniti vehicles due to a defect in the back-up camera and display settings. The affected models include the Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note, Versa Sedan, GT-R, and Taxi, as well as the Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30, QX80, QX50, QX60, Q70, and Q70L.
The defect allows the back-up camera and display settings to be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible. The system retains this setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse, causing the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility." The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
Nissan will notify owners in phases and have dealers update the back-up camera settings software free of charge. The recall began on November 11, 2019. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or Infiniti customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
