BMW, Rolls-Royce, and Toyota Recall Vehicles for Backup Camera Software Defect
BMW, Rolls-Royce, and Toyota are recalling specific 2018-2020 models because backup camera settings may persist, hiding the rear view image and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the lack of a backup camera image increases the risk of a crash, but no injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2018-2020 BMW, Rolls-Royce, and Toyota vehicles due to a defect in the back-up camera and display settings. The affected models include various BMW 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, M, and Z4 series vehicles, as well as the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Cullinan, and the 2020 Toyota Supra.
The defect allows the back-up camera and display settings to be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible. The system retains this setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse, causing the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors." The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
The recall began on November 8, 2019. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the back-up camera software free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, Rolls-Royce at 1-877-877-3735, or Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
