BMW Recalls Multiple 2019-2021 Models for Rearview Camera Software Issues
BMW is recalling 13,858 vehicles from 2019-2021 model years due to rearview camera software issues that may obscure visibility when reversing. Dealers will update the software free of charge.

The affected vehicles include 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, 8 Series, X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7 models, as well as Alpina variants. The rearview camera system does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, which establishes rear visibility requirements.
When shifting into Reverse, a portion of the rearview camera image may become obscured, or the screen may not illuminate properly. If a driver relies solely on the rearview camera for rear visibility, this reduced view can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Owners will be notified by BMW, and dealers will inspect the rearview camera software and update it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 16, 2021. For assistance, owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
