Nissan and Infiniti Recall Vehicles Due to Passenger Air Bag Defect

Nissan is recalling specific 2013-2015 models because a faulty sensor may prevent the passenger air bag from deploying in a crash.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical component (air bag) that may fail to deploy, increasing injury risk, but the source text does not report any actual injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.

Plain-English summary

Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles, and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The recall involves 919 vehicles that received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a previous repair.

The defect causes the OCS control unit to potentially misclassify an occupied front passenger seat as empty. If the system fails to detect an adult occupant, the passenger air bag will be deactivated. This failure could increase the risk of injury to the passenger if the air bag does not deploy during a crash where deployment is warranted.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
