Nissan and Infiniti Recall Vehicles Due to Passenger Air Bag Defect

Nissan is recalling specific 2013-2017 Nissan, Infiniti, and Chevrolet vehicles because the passenger air bag may fail to deploy in a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the passenger air bag may fail to deploy, resulting in an increased risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.

Plain-English summary

Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2017 Nissan, Infiniti, and Chevrolet vehicles due to a defect in the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS). The affected vehicles include the Nissan Maxima, Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, Pathfinder, NV200 Taxi, Rogue, Murano, Murano Hybrid, Pathfinder Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, as well as the Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, Q50 Hybrid, Q50, and JX35.

In these vehicles, the OCS may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash. If the air bag does not deploy as intended, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, QX60, and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016, and owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan, Infiniti, or Chevrolet customer service for more information.
