Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 control module software can cause power loss

Mazda is recalling certain 2024 CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 vehicles because powertrain and engine control module software may illuminate malfunction lights and cause a loss of drive power.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 4 covers structural vehicle defects: the source states the fault can cause a loss of drive power, which is a total loss of propulsion rather than a degraded function.

Plain-English summary

Mazda North American Operations is recalling certain 2024 CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 vehicles. About 31,488 units are potentially affected.

The powertrain control module (PCM) and engine control module (ECM) software may cause malfunction indicator lights to illuminate and a loss of drive power.

NHTSA states that a loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will reprogram the PCM and ECM software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 19, 2024. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6, referencing recall number 7024J, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
