2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Recalled for Rearview Camera Software Defect
Volkswagen is recalling 2022 ID.4 vehicles with defective rearview camera software. The defect can delay or deactivate the rearview camera image, reducing rear visibility and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a confirmed software defect affecting a safety-critical system (rear visibility). Although no crashes or injuries have been reported, the defect creates significant collision risk when reversing. This matches the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America is recalling certain 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles. The issue stems from replacement infotainment control units that were installed during previous repairs. These units contain incorrect software that can cause the rearview camera image to delay or deactivate when reversing.
This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111 (Rear Visibility). A rearview camera with a delayed or deactivated image reduces driver visibility to the rear of the vehicle, increasing the risk of crashes when backing up.
Approximately 4 vehicles are affected. Volkswagen will notify affected owners by mail and dealers will update the software at no charge. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 for additional information, or contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
