2023 Mitsubishi Outlander: Rearview Camera Software Defect Recall
Mitsubishi is recalling 198,940 certain 2022-2024 Outlander and 2023-2025 Outlander PHEV vehicles due to a software error that may freeze or prevent the rearview camera from displaying, reducing rear visibility and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall affects a critical vehicle safety system (rear visibility) due to a software defect that increases crash risk. No injuries, property damage, or crashes have been reported, making this a risk-of-harm scenario where injury has not yet been reported, which meets the High severity threshold.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 198,940 vehicles from model years 2022-2025: certain 2022-2024 Outlander and 2023-2025 Outlander PHEV models. The vehicles are affected by a software error in the in-vehicle infotainment system (A-IVI) that causes the rearview camera image to freeze or fail to display on the screen.
This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111, which requires proper rear visibility. When the rearview camera image does not display, drivers lose visibility of what is directly behind the vehicle, significantly increasing the risk of a crash when backing.
The remedy is a free software update to the A-IVI system. Owner notifications were expected to begin June 30, 2025, and Mitsubishi assigned this recall the internal designation SR-25-001. This recall replaces and expands the previous NHTSA recall 23V345; vehicles already repaired under that earlier recall will require the new software update as well. Owners should contact their Mitsubishi dealer to schedule the repair.
