Mitsubishi Recalls Outlander Models Due to Safety System Software Defect
Mitsubishi is recalling 2017-2018 Outlander, Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, and Outlander PHEV vehicles because incorrect software may prevent safety systems like automatic emergency braking from functioning.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where safety systems may fail to intervene, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vehicles equipped with a Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system, 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross vehicles, and 2017-2018 Outlander vehicles equipped with an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system and/or an Electric Parking Brake (EPB) system. The recall affects approximately 58,916 vehicles.
The defect involves incorrect software in the Hydraulic Unit Electronic Control Unit (ECU). This error may prevent the intervention of safety systems, including automatic emergency braking, Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), or the Brake Auto Hold (BAH) function, when these systems are in use. If these safety systems do not function as intended, it can increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will update the Hydraulic Unit-ECU software free of charge. The recall began on October 16, 2018. Owners may contact Mitsubishi Motors North America customer service at 1-888-648-7820 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
