Volkswagen Golf GTI rearview camera image can be delayed or deactivated
Volkswagen is recalling certain 2022-2024 Golf GTI vehicles because a software error may delay or deactivate the rearview camera image, failing FMVSS 111.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: a rear visibility aid may not display, but the vehicle retains control and propulsion and no incidents are recorded.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2022-2024 Golf GTI vehicles. About 8,237 units are potentially affected.
A software error may delay or deactivate the rearview camera image, resulting in the rearview camera image not displaying as intended. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility".
NHTSA states that a rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will update the camera control unit software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 3, 2025. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
