2021 Cadillac Escalade daytime running lights control software defect
General Motors is recalling 2021 Cadillac Escalade vehicles. The daytime running lights may not deactivate when headlights are on, which may cause glare and reduce visibility, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, but no injuries or crashes have been reported. The hazard (glare-related crash risk) is theoretical, making this a risk-of-harm product without reported harm, which scores as High (3) per the rubric.
Plain-English summary
General Motors is recalling certain 2021 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV vehicles, along with GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Chevrolet Suburban models. The defect affects the daytime running lights (DRL) control, which may fail to deactivate when the headlights are turned on. This causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, which governs lighting equipment.
When the daytime running lights remain active while headlights are on, they may produce glare that reduces visibility and increases the risk of a crash.
Approximately 338,735 vehicles are affected. Owners were notified starting December 15, 2022. General Motors is providing a free over-the-air (OTA) software update for the Body Control Module. Owners can arrange the update by contacting GM customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, or by visiting www.nhtsa.gov.
