GM recalls multiple 2020-2023 vehicles for daytime running light control defect

General Motors is recalling multiple 2020-2023 models because daytime running lights may fail to turn off when headlights are on, creating glare and visibility hazards.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Vehicle lighting defect creates potential visibility hazard and crash risk, but no injuries have been reported. Without reported harm, the hazard is theoretical, warranting High severity.

Plain-English summary

General Motors is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5, 2021-2023 Buick Envision, and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles, affecting approximately 740,108 vehicles total.

The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are turned on. This failure violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108 for lighting equipment. When DRLs remain on with headlights, the resulting glare can reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash.

The defect affects the software in the body control module that controls the lighting system. No injuries have been reported related to this issue.

General Motors will provide a free software update to the affected vehicles through dealers or over-the-air updates. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 23, 2023. Owners may contact their vehicle manufacturer's customer service for assistance or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
