2021 Buick Envision air bag warning lamp may fail to illuminate
GM is recalling 2021 Buick Envision vehicles—the air bag warning lamp may fail to illuminate due to a module defect. Owners should contact their dealer for a free software update.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a defect in a safety-critical air bag warning system with no reported injuries or illnesses. The malfunction indicator light may fail to warn drivers of actual air bag problems, creating theoretical risk of harm. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm defects without reported injury are classified as Level 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
General Motors is recalling certain 2021 model year vehicles, including the Buick Envision, Cadillac CT4, CT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Corvette, Suburban, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. Approximately 285,622 vehicles are affected. The issue involves the communications gateway module, which incorrectly processes a loss of communication with the sensing diagnostic module.
This defect causes the air bag malfunction indicator light to inconsistently illuminate. As a result, the warning light may fail to alert the driver to a problem with the air bag system, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
General Motors is providing a free software update to correct the module's operation. The update can be installed at a dealership or downloaded over-the-air (OTA). Owner notification letters were sent on July 1, 2021. Owners can contact their vehicle manufacturer's customer service for assistance: Buick at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC at 1-800-462-8782. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
