Approximately 285,622 vehicles are affected. The issue involves the communications gateway module, which incorrectly processes a loss of communication with the sensing diagnostic module.

This defect causes the air bag malfunction indicator light to inconsistently illuminate. As a result, the warning light may fail to alert the driver to a problem with the air bag system, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

General Motors is providing a free software update to correct the module's operation. The update can be installed at a dealership or downloaded over-the-air (OTA). Owner notification letters were sent on July 1, 2021.
