Chevrolet and GMC trucks recalled for transmission control valve failure
General Motors is recalling certain 2020-2022 trucks and SUVs with diesel engines because the transmission control valve may fail, causing rear wheels to lock up and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: Rear wheel lock-up from transmission control valve failure is a structural vehicle defect that directly increases crash risk. Per the severity rubric, structural vehicle defects warrant a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
General Motors is recalling 463,295 vehicles across multiple model lines from 2020-2022, including Chevrolet Silverado (1500, 2500, 3500), GMC Sierra (1500, 2500, 3500), Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. All affected vehicles are equipped with diesel engines.
The transmission control valve in these vehicles may fail, causing the rear wheels to lock up. This significantly increases the risk of a crash.
Owners with affected vehicles should contact their dealer for a free software update to the transmission control module. General Motors has also established a special coverage program to repair transmissions found to contain defective control valves. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 12, 2024. For more information, owners may contact GM customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. The NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline is available at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
