Navistar Recalls International Trucks Due to Parking Brake Failure Risk
Navistar is recalling specific International trucks because engaging the PTO switch can override the parking brake, causing unintended movement.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where unintended vehicle movement increases the risk of a crash, but no specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain 2019-2020 International MV and HV, 2018-2020 Workstar, and 2018-2019 Durastar vehicles. The recall affects vehicles equipped with feature codes 12VXT and 12VXU. A total of 12,539 vehicles are affected by this safety recall.
The defect occurs when the parking brake is applied and the automatic transmission is in the 'Drive' or 'Reverse' position. If the operator engages the stationary PTO switch, the engine RPM may ramp up and overcome the parking brake's ability to hold the vehicle. This unintended vehicle movement increases the risk of a crash.
Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will update the Engine Control Module to enable the PTO neutral interlock free of charge. The recall began on January 16, 2020. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
