Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Toyota Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Lexus ES350, and Lexus ES300h vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between October 19, 2012, and October 27, 2015, for the Avalon models, and between June 18, 2012, and July 6, 2015, for the Lexus models. These vehicles are equipped with the optional Pre-Collision System (PCS).
The recall is issued because the PCS may unexpectedly activate and apply the brakes when the radar detects a steel joint or plate in the roadway as an object. A vehicle that unexpectedly brakes increases the risk of a crash.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace certain PCS components free of charge. The recall began on July 28, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's campaign numbers for this recall are F1V and F2E. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
