Toyota and Lexus vehicles recalled for air bag sensor short circuit defect
Toyota and Lexus are recalling certain 2020-2022 vehicles with a faulty Occupant Classification System sensor that may prevent the front passenger air bag from deploying in a crash, increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle safety system (air bag) with a defect that could prevent deployment in a crash, creating significant injury risk. However, no illnesses or injuries have been reported, and the hazard remains theoretical. Per the rubric, when the source text states no injuries and the hazard is theoretical, the score is at most 3.
Plain-English summary
Toyota and Lexus are recalling certain 2020-2022 vehicles due to a defect in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor. The sensor may develop a short circuit that prevents the front passenger air bag from deploying during a crash.
Affected vehicles include 2020-2022 Toyota Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, and Sienna Hybrid models, as well as 2020-2022 Lexus ES, ES Hybrid, RX, and RX Hybrid models. The OCS sensor is designed to detect passenger presence and adjust air bag deployment. If the sensor experiences a short circuit, it cannot function properly, and the front passenger air bag may not deploy when needed.
An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury to the front passenger. Dealers will inspect and replace the affected sensor at no cost to owners. Toyota began mailing owner notification letters in February 2024, with additional letters scheduled to continue through January 2026.
Owners should contact their local Toyota or Lexus dealer to schedule inspection and repair, or call Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. For additional information, contact NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
