General Motors is recalling specific 2014-2015 Chevrolet and GMC trucks because the ignition lock actuator may bind, potentially causing loss of steering and braking power.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the ignition may snap back, causing loss of steering and braking power and increasing the risk of a crash and occupant injury, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, 2015 Chevrolet Suburban vehicles, and 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between January 24, 2014, and February 26, 2014, with specific production dates for the Suburban and Tahoe models in February 2014. The recall involves a defect in the ignition lock actuator, which may bind and make turning the key difficult or cause the ignition to get stuck in the "Start" position.
If the ignition is stuck in the "Start" position, it may suddenly snap back into the "Accessory" position. This action can cause a loss of engine, steering, and braking power, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if a crash occurs, the air bags may not deploy, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition lock housing free of charge. The recall began on November 20, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15573. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
