Mitsubishi, Chrysler, and Dodge Recall Vehicles for Sun Visor Airbag Hazard
Mitsubishi, Chrysler, and Dodge are recalling specific 2000-2005 vehicles because the passenger sun visor may detach during airbag deployment, increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of occupant injury during airbag deployment, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, fitting the criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2000-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse, 2001-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, 2001-2005 Chrysler Sebring, and 2001-2005 Dodge Stratus vehicles. The recall covers approximately 443,442 vehicles manufactured between April 1999 and March 2005.
In the affected vehicles, the passenger side sun visor may be folded down in a position that allows it to detach if the passenger frontal air bag deploys. If the sun visor detaches and is propelled rearward, there is an increased risk of occupant injury.
MMNA will notify owners of the Mitsubishi vehicles, while Chrysler will notify owners of the Chrysler and Dodge vehicles. Dealers will install a tether strap to retain the passenger sun visor free of charge. The recall began on July 20, 2015. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820 (recall number SR-15-005) or Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 (recall number R30).
