What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the defect increases the risk of vehicle rollaway and injury in a crash, but no specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban vehicles equipped with a base radio and an internal amplifier. The recall involves approximately 57,512 vehicles.
The radios in the affected vehicles may become inoperative, which prevents the audible chime that notifies the driver if the door is opened with the key in the ignition or the audible seat belt warning indicating that seat belts are not buckled. This failure to provide audible indicators increases the risk of a vehicle rollaway and may increase the risk of injury in a crash if occupants are not wearing seat belts. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 114 and 208.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the radio software free of charge. The recall began on July 2, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC owners may contact 1-800-462-8782. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
