What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the fuel system that can cause engine stalling and inability to restart, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash.
Plain-English summary
Mazda Motor Corp is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Mazda5 vehicles manufactured between June 29, 2009, and April 28, 2010. The recall involves approximately 16,200 vehicles.
The defect occurs because water may not have been completely removed from the harness connector of the fuel pump due to variations in the fuel tank leak check process. This residual water can cause the connector pin to corrode and potentially break. If the pin breaks, the fuel pump may become inoperative, leading to engine stalling and an inability to restart the engine, which increases the risk of a crash.
Dealers will inspect the fuel pump connector and, if necessary, replace it and repair the harness free of charge. The safety recall began on December 6, 2010. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
