Plain-English summary
Mazda North American Operations is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Mazda6 vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine. These vehicles were manufactured between September 14, 2009, and May 2, 2011. The recall involves approximately 42,000 vehicles.
The defect occurs when spiders weave a web in the evaporative canister vent hose, blocking it. This blockage causes excessive negative pressure in the fuel tank, which could cause the tank to crack and result in a fuel leak. A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire.
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module and inspect and clean the canister vent line. If a web is found, the fuel tank and check valve on the canister vent line will be replaced. These repairs will be done free of charge. The recall began on April 30, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
