Mazda Recalls 2009-2010 Mazda6 Vehicles Due to Air Bag Control Unit Defect
Mazda is recalling 2009-2010 Mazda6 vehicles because moisture may damage the air bag control unit, preventing air bags from deploying in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the air bag control unit may fail to deploy air bags in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Plain-English summary
Mazda North American Operations is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured between February 4, 2008, and December 3, 2009. The recall involves 41,918 vehicles.
The protective coating on the air bag control unit (ACU) may not have been properly applied. This defect allows moisture to damage the unit, which can cause it to malfunction. If the ACU fails, the air bag warning light will illuminate, and the air bags may not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Mazda dealers will replace the ACU free of charge. However, parts were not currently available at the time the recall began in June 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
