Mazda Recalls 2001-2002 Tributes for Brake Fluid Leak Fire Risk

Mazda is recalling 2001-2002 Tribute vehicles because a leaking brake fluid reservoir cap could contact ABS wiring, potentially causing a fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake fluid leak) that explicitly poses a risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury or property-damage reports/risks.

Plain-English summary

Mazda Motor Corp is recalling certain model year 2001-2002 Mazda Tribute vehicles manufactured between April 20, 2000, and July 19, 2002. The recall involves approximately 52,390 vehicles.

The brake master cylinder reservoir cap on these vehicles can leak brake fluid. If the fluid leaks, it may come into contact with the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module wiring harness connector. This contact can lead to corrosion in the electrical connector, which may result in melting, smoking, or a possible fire.

Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake master cylinder reservoir cap and modify the ABS electrical system free of charge. Until the repair is performed, vehicle owners are advised to park their vehicles outside. The safety recall began on June 22, 2012. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500, option 6, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
