Mazda Recalls 2008-2009 Mazda3 Models for Wiper Motor Defect

Mazda is recalling 2008-2009 Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 vehicles because a bent wiper motor terminal may cause wipers to stop working, increasing crash risk in bad weather.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (loss of wipers in adverse weather) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Mazda Motor Corp is recalling certain 2008-2009 model year Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 vehicles manufactured between January 7, 2008, and November 28, 2008. The recall addresses a defect where the ground terminal of the windshield wiper motor may have been inadvertently bent during assembly.

Over time, this condition can increase the electrical resistance of the motor circuit to the point where the windshield wipers will not work. The loss of wiper function in adverse weather conditions could potentially increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will install an additional ground harness on the wiper motor free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before July 15, 2011. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
