Volkswagen Atlas rearview camera image can become distorted in reverse

Volkswagen is recalling certain 2024-2025 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles because a software error may distort the rearview camera image when the vehicle is in reverse.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: the rear view may be distorted rather than absent, and the vehicle retains control and propulsion.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2024-2025 Atlas Cross Sport and Atlas vehicles. About 171,381 units are potentially affected.

A software error may cause the rearview camera image to become distorted when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility".

NHTSA states that a distorted rearview camera image can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the camera control unit software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 5, 2025. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
